As much as we love days of field work high in the alpine, the Lake Fork Valley Conservancy likes to enjoy the civilized company of our community.
In late May or early June, we participate in the Lake San Cristobal 700th Anniversary Weekend to bookend the venerable Lake San Cristobal 5K 10K footrace. The weekend celebrates Lake City’s azure namesake and Colorado's second largest natural lake with boat tours, geology lectures, music, and art. These activities revolve around the 31st annual Lake San Cristobal 5k/10k (LSC 5k/10k), a footrace that first lured athletes to Lake City in 1981 with Lake City’s spectacular scenery, glorious early-summer weather, and exceptional hospitality.
This year we are thrilled to host the 2016 Rockin River' Beer & Film Festival. Four days of films, Colorado craft beer, and live music will liven the community July 19th-23rd.
In recent years, we've hosted the Splash Down! Water Festival, an all-ages, education-focused fair that highlights our rivers, the importance of water, and conservation with group games, hands-on education, and a cookout at Memorial Park for all ages. The LFVC tests your water knowledge with a water trivia dunk tank, and partners from Trout Unlimited, the Bureau of Land Management, and Lake City Friends of the Bears (to name a few) lead games and tutorials on subjects ranging from bear awareness to fly tying and casting to tie dye.
September brings Hearts & Spades Community Garden's Shpadoinkle Harvest Day, a community potluck at the garden that encourages locals to eat fresh, not flesh! A "shpadoinkle" day is one of those bluebird days when the sun is shining, the birds, are singing, and your heart is as full as a baked potato. The name and the tagline are taken from Cannibal! The Musical, film about Alferd Packer, and shot in Lake City by the men who later created South Park. The Harvest Day's proceeds go toward the garden's hunger alleviation, farm-to-school, and fresh and local food access programs.
We pepper this regular schedule with public education opportunities and community outreach.
If you'd like to submit a film, give a lecture, lead a tour, or man a booth at one of our events, reach out! We'd love to have you on board. Contact Stephen to get involved.
