Geology Programs

Discover the dynamic geological story of the Lake City region through two immersive programs led by local geologist Harvey DuChene. Whether you're tracing the ancient forces that shaped Colorado's dramatic volcanic landscape or learning to identify the remarkable rocks and minerals found along the Alpine Loop, these programs offer a rare opportunity to explore the earth beneath your feet with an expert guide. Programs are available seasonally and are open to adults and older youth.

Volcano Tours

Few experiences compare to standing at the edge of ancient volcanic history with someone who can bring it to life. Harvey DuChene, a local geologist with deep knowledge of the region, leads this half-day driving tour through some of the most geologically significant viewpoints in the Lake City area. From dramatic overlooks to sweeping valley vistas, each stop reveals a new chapter in the volcanic story of this remarkable corner of Colorado.

Colorado Volcano Tours

The tour is largely vehicle-based with minimal walking, making it accessible to a wide range of participants. Carpooling is strongly encouraged as vehicles are not provided, and participants are asked to come prepared for a morning outdoors — bring a folding camp chair, drinking water, a hat, a jacket, sunscreen, and a snack.

Rocks & Minerals Class

$40 adults | $25 youth (ages 11–15) | Ages 11+

Led by Harvey DuChene, this engaging session explores the geological history of the region and teaches participants how to recognize common rocks and minerals found along the Alpine Loop. You’ll gain practical knowledge you can use on future hikes and adventures, along with a deeper appreciation for the natural forces that shaped the landscape.

Lake City Colorado Rocks & Minerals Course Class

Step into the fascinating world beneath your feet with this hands-on introduction to the geology of the Lake City area. The Rocks & Minerals Class is perfect for anyone who has ever wondered how to identify the stones and minerals scattered across Colorado’s rugged terrain. Beginner-friendly, no prior knowledge needed.
