Geology Programs

Programs are available seasonally and are open to adults and older youth.
Volcano Tours

Few experiences compare to standing at the edge of ancient volcanic history with someone who can bring it to life. Harvey DuChene, a local geologist with deep knowledge of the region, leads this half-day driving tour through some of the most geologically significant viewpoints in the Lake City area. From dramatic overlooks to sweeping valley vistas, each stop reveals a new chapter in the volcanic story of this remarkable corner of Colorado.

The tour is largely vehicle-based with minimal walking, making it accessible to a wide range of participants. Carpooling is strongly encouraged as vehicles are not provided, and participants are asked to come prepared for a morning outdoors — bring a folding camp chair, drinking water, a hat, a jacket, sunscreen, and a snack.
